Call for Nominations for 2020 Eco-Award
Purpose and context
The Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) is pleased to call for nominations for the annual Environmental Community’s Organizer (ECO-Award). Each year, the ECO-Award honours an individual, team, or organization which has positively contributed to the field of environmental studies in Canada through community-building, research, knowledge-to-action, or innovations in practice or approaches.
Nominations for or applications from individuals, groups, or organizations who work in interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral teams to advance the field of environmental studies through the development, enhancement, or expansion of innovative collaborations and networks are particularly encouraged.
This award is made possible by a healthy level of participation and membership in Canada’s environmental-studies community. All nominators and nominees are encouraged to participate in ESAC by maintaining their ESAC memberships or becoming members.
Nominations will be due at midnight EST on Friday, May 22, 2020 via our online form at the link provided below.
Selection of the award will be made by ESAC’s Awards Committee. Winners will be notified by the end of May and officially announced and honoured virtually at ESAC’s annual conference. Due to current global health circumstances, the conference is now taking place virtually.
This award was created at ESAC’s 2012 annual meeting in Waterloo, Ontario. Past recipients are Kira Jade Cooper (2012), Ella Haley (2013), Dave Ireland (2014), the Under Western Skies conference at Mount Royal University, directed by Robert Boschman and Liam Haggarty (2015), Hives for Humanity (2016), Ken Hall (2017) and Dogwood BC (2018 and 2019).
Selection criteria
The ECO-Award selection committee will evaluate nominees based on the following general criteria, The nominee:
- works within the field of environmental studies in Canada;
- contributes to community-building within the field of environmental studies through the creation of partnerships, networks, relationships and projects;
- demonstrates collaborative and reciprocal relationships and partnerships to address issues of importance to the field of environmental studies;
- increases environmental awareness through knowledge-sharing and outreach activities;
- encourages environmental action and empowers and supports others to become involved in activities related to the field of environmental studies; and
- promotes the mobilization of knowledge and research to action and practice.
Required information
- Name, position, and full contact information of the nominator and name, position, and full contact information of the nominee(s), and indication if this is an individual, group or team nomination (self-nominations are permitted).
- Description of initiative/work/project: In plain language, please describe the initiative, work, or project of the individual, group, or organization you are nominating, using the following questions as a guide (no more than 750 words in total):
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project contribute to community-building within the field of environmental studies?
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project demonstrate collaborative and reciprocal relationships and partnerships to address issues of importance within environmental studies?
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project increase environmental awareness through knowledge-sharing and outreach activities?
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project encourage environmental action and empower or support others to become involved in activities or initiatives related to environmental studies?
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project promote knowledge mobilization and action?
- How does the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project benefit others or environmental studies in Canada?
- Is this a one-time project, or is it ongoing?
- Are there any other aspects of the nominee(s)’s initiative, work, or project that you wish to highlight?

Letters of support: Please include at least one letter of support (and no more than three) from individuals who can validate the nomination and provide further ?information, background, or testimony about the value and impact of the nominee’s work and the nominee’s suitability for this award (minimum of one letter of support.
4. Any other information, such as the CV of the nominee(s), photographs, testimonials, media items, publications, or video, which may illustrate ?the quality, suitability, and impacts of the nominee(s) for this award and may be helpful to ESAC’s Awards Committee.
